How Cigarettes Are Made 

If you smoke or know someone who does, you might be interested in knowing how cigarettes are made.

Tobacco is grown in huge fields. In fact, those growing fields stretch for miles. These are outdoors-- in the open. These are leaves. Then, when they are mature, they cut these leaves, spider webs, bug parts, snake skins, dirt and all and bring them into the curing barns. When they get them into the barns they don’t take each leaf and clean all the spider webs and uneaten bug parts off them. That would be too labor intensive and far too expensive. They just soak them in sugar water for a few days. Why? Because sugar is highly addictive. And because sugar makes tobacco taste better. So the sugar is absorbed into the leaves and crystallizes on the outside of the leaves.

Then they hang them in the rafters of these curing barns to dry. These are BARNS. Do you know what lives in the rafters of these barns? Bats, among other things. Depending on the weather, it may take these leaves 3-5 months to cure sufficiently. And those bats do what they do best for 3-5 months. Yup. They pee and poop all over those leaves. If you put a tobacco leaf under a microscope you can see the dried white spots on it...dried guano.

When they cut them down they stack them on huge pallets to wait their turn to go to the shredder. You know what lives on the floors of these BARNS? That’s right. Rats. And the rats eat their way into the stacks of leaves after the sugar. But did you know that one drop of pure nicotine is a fatal dose for a 6' 4" man? It doesn’t take much for a rat, no matter how big he is. So, he eats his way into the leaves and dies there. And, of course, there are roaches and ants and other crawly things--all attracted by the sugar.

Then along comes the forklift and carries it all to the shredder. Look on your cigarette pack. It probably says “blended tobaccos.” Do you think they blend different types of leaves for different flavors? No way. They shred them and blend them because the Food and Drug Administration says you can have no more than six rat parts per cigarette or you must throw the entire batch out. And they have a quality control person sitting down at the end of the line that pricks out every 25th cigarette, cuts it open with a razor blade and examines it under a microscope to make sure that there are no more than six rat parts per cigarette.

Do you think the cigarette companies want to throw out millions of cigarettes? Rest assured, they blend those suckers really well. It’s no accident that they come out wrapped in pristine little white papers. Do you think anyone would buy them if they thought they were dirty? Have you ever had one of your cigarettes fall out of the pack and get dirty? Really dirty? Did you put it in your mouth and smoke it anyway? But you’re putting pieces of rat tails and rat intestines in your mouth and smoking them everyday. If I wrapped some rat guts in a piece of white paper and handed them to you right now would you light them and smoke them? Yet, you’ve had many cigarettes that tasted worse than others, haven’t you? And, I’m sure you’ve had some that really stunk? It’s due to all those ‘non-tobacco’ parts.
